Always a gridlock alert day but such a New York tradition! The first tree was erected in 1931 by the workers building Rockefeller Center. It was a 20 foot high balsam fir tree.
More than 75 years later, the tradition continues, albeit a bit bigger and brighter! The tree is required to be 65 feet tall and 35 feet wide although lately the tree is more like 75 to 95 feet tall. It is typically a Norway Spruce and decorated with over five miles of lights and a star.
