One week from today is the unofficial start of the summer. Lots of us will be headed out of town to celebrate Memorial Day weekend. For years I ran the Spring Lake Five on the Saturday morning of Memorial Day weekend and that was my kick-off. We ran, saw old friends, enjoyed post-race beers at The Smith’s house where we saw more old friends and wore our SL5 medals all day. We’d get back to Bay Head before some of our friends had even woken up. The ‘we’ changed from year to year but there was always a core group of us that went together and it was always fun, rain or shine, summer had started.
The first 100 women finishers get a rose, I got a rose once in 2008 (I believe) and that very well may have been the last time I ran the race. Not because I was afraid I couldn’t beat my time although I probably couldn’t but because in the past few years we’ve had weddings and birthdays and I had a little girl.
This year I’ll be celebrating a friend’s 40th in Harbour Island but I’ll be thinking of you Spring Lake Five and the Jersey Shore. I will miss you and see you soon and my little one will be using her new Jersey Strong beach pail!
